2024 has been the year of blushing. In the last nine months alone, the beauty community has popularized several trends around the product, and its leading moment shows no signs of going away. Think Sabrina Carpenter-style drapes, nude shades, warm-toned tans, and the rise of liquid formulas. But now, thanks to social media, an even bolder look is in fashion: red blush.
How to Perfect the Placement of Red Blush
To achieve your red blush look, you need to figure out which placement best suits your face. Each option highlights different features and can be modified according to your own preferences and overall vibe. If you’re going for the Victoria’s Secret model’s effortless blush look, Scibelli says to apply a red blush to the apples of your cheeks.
Makeup artists also add that a damp makeup sponge can be used to advance the blending process, lightly rubbing the product in, so it melts easily into the skin. If sponges aren’t your thing, Scibelli says a foundation brush will also work. “My favorite brush for cream and powder blush is the Cozzette S135Brush,” says Thomas. To use it with cream blush, she says you should dab the product onto your face while buffing it into the rounds of your cheeks and the bridge of your nose. When it comes to powder formulas, Thomas advises scooping a small amount onto your brush, tapping off the excess, and sweeping onto your skin in circular motions.
How to adapt red blush to your complexion
As with most makeup products, selecting a specific shade that complements your complexion will make or break the final result. This is especially true for this color because not all red blushes are created equal. For those with cooler undertones, Thomas encourages you to try a pigmented shade of blue. “Think about cherries,” he says. “This shade will complement your natural tone beautifully. [It is] also an excellent option for very fair skin.”
The beauty of red blush is that it looks fabulous on all skin tones,” says Thomas. “Believe me, I’ve been using it for years. With the right shade and application, anyone can embrace red blush with confidence.
Makeup to wear with red blush
You’ve mastered application and found the right undertones, so it’s time to find out which eyeshadow and lipstick go well with your stunning cheeks. For fall and winter, Scibelli suggests a clean eyeliner or a very natural shadow. Minimal coloring will make the pigment in your blush really stand out. “You can also go for a monochromatic look by adding some corals or reds in the eyes,” says Scibelli.
However, the biggest challenge, she notes, is the concern about looking too red, especially if your skin reaches that shade naturally. To avoid this, aim in the direction of a neutral lip. “Whether it’s a sheer gloss or a nude/mauve lipstick,” says Scibelli. If you go this route, you won’t have to worry about the color overpowering you.
