Getting dressed in winter is more difficult than in summer. In the warmer months, all you need to look stylish are some wide-leg trousers and an oversized linen shirt, or perhaps a dress with puffed sleeves and a well-chosen pair of sandals, and your latest outfit is in the bag. In winter, however, things are not so simple.
Creating a stylish look that will keep you warm in the coldest temperatures is no easy task, but there are things you can do to simplify the process; The first and most effective is to invest in the right parts and brands.
Marianne Smyth wears a Totême coat, Raey trousers and a bag from The Row.
What are these brands, I hear you ask? To save you from having to go the more expensive route, I’ve narrowed down what I consider to be the best winter clothing brands out there: all 14. Scroll to see if your favorites are in my favorites and to shop my must-haves. Have items of each for the winter 2024 season.
1. TotÊme
Perhaps the most in-demand brand of the season, Totême has created more cult pieces for winter than any other. In addition to its classic coats, as seen on Marianne and Francesca above, Totême’s knitwear has also had an impressive fan club of late.
2. ARKET
My go-to for elevated high street basics, Arket really comes into its own in the winter months, offering sartorial feasts of puffer coats, chunky boots, knitwear and leathers; all of which feel much more premium than their prices.
3. NANUSHKA
Specializing in vegan leather and sustainable materials, Nanushka pieces are a year-round favorite among conscious shoppers. However, looking at their latest collection, I think Winter 2024 is their strongest yet. You’ll find faux fur, capes, long coats and boxy tailored pieces.
4. LISA YANG
Using high-end cashmere cut into sophisticated pieces that you’ll have in your closet for years, I always spend an inordinate amount of time in Lisa Yang’s new arrivals section, especially in the winter months when cozy knits are king On Top Of the agenda.
5. UNIQLO
Uniqlo’s Heattech collection is my winter ride or die; I just can’t get dressed without it. Using advances in fabric technology, Uniqlo’s Heattech range helps keep the body at a comfortable temperature, even when suffering from severe frostbite. Aside from that, its core range is also a haven of essential winter staples, and collaborations with Claire Waight Keller and JW Anderson make it a favorite of fashion editors.
6. THE FRANKIE SHOP
After purchasing jumpers, pants and a couple of vests at Frankie Shop, I’ve always dreamed of owning one of their instantly recognizable coats. Have you come across a stylish dresser and wondered where they found it? You can spot a Frankie Shop fan from a mile away, and that’s absolutely part of its charm
7. COS
Along with many cult favorites and best-selling items, COS has proven that high-quality tailoring can be found on the high street. COS maintains a minimalist style with timeless styles and elegant craftsmanship that makes each piece look much more expensive than its price.
8. ALMADA LABEL
What I wouldn’t give to have a closet full of Almada Label. Creating what I like to call elevated basics with a twist, Almada’s designs are classic but with an elegant direction; Think coats with oversized sleeves and cozy cashmere crewnecks.
9. THE ROW
The key to looking rich and carefree lies in The Row’s relaxed approach to winter design. Somehow, the brand knows exactly what I want to wear before I do it, as evidenced by its very stylish take on the balaclava, baggy jeans, and trench coat trend that’s currently keeping me up at night.
10. WHISTLES
Whistles has always been one of my favorite affordable brands and seeing their latest winter collection has reaffirmed my affection. It’s one of the few places I buy pants (the fit is perfect), so I always fill my basket with that when the cold snap hits. Oh, and their knitwear doesn’t disappoint either.
