Trend: ‘Army Days’, Military jackets, olive drab, and utility details

Several designers showed riffs on military and utility styles during the SS25 runway season. There are several reasons for the popularity of this trend. The 2024 United States general election is just days away, and with the country possibly electing its first female president, the topic of women’s empowerment is on everyone’s lips. It could be said that women’s clothing imitating military outfits sends a message of strength and independence. While some designers, like Elie Saab, offered traditional takes on military looks, others, like Versace, mixed things up by adding utilitarian details with other contrasting styles.

Here are ten looks from recent SS25 shows.

Burberry: designer, Daniel Lee

A lilac ribbed knit top under a heavy cotton jacket with army green frayed edges, large round silver buttons, a vintage Burberry crest and a matching knee-length skirt. Accessories included a skinny Burberry check belt and black slides.

Elie Saab

A dark green dress with a slit skirt, patch pockets and a wide webbed belt. Cream and black strappy sandals finished the look.

Gucci

An oversized zipped jacket in dark green jersey with matching short shorts. Accessories included framed sunglasses, driving gloves, a small patent bag and strappy pumps, all in dark green.

Hermès

A beige colored knit crew neck top with satin patch pockets and matching briefs under sheer pants with side zippers. A brown leather belt, handbag and wide cuffs accessorized the look.

Ellen Hodakova Larson

An oversized khaki jacket with long patch pockets and matching shorts with a front panel. Accessories included a belted waist and belt at the hem of the shorts, glasses with clip-on sunglasses, and black flip-flops.

Mugler

An olive green jacket with oversized shoulders, a cinched waist and patch pockets over a matching micro mini skirt. A green satchel and Mary-Janes finished the look.

Private Policy

An army green jacket with a brown leather collar, matching frayed shorts, and a clutch bag with gold flip flops.

Versace

A brown long-sleeved shirt with white crystal buttons, paired with a gold mirror skirt, red sheer stockings, and black T-strap sandals.

Ferrari

A brown heavy cotton patch pocket shirt with a matching mini skirt and belt of the same color. Accessories included tan suede driving gloves and a black patent leather handbag and ankle straps.

Alexander McQueen

A cropped DB jacket in olive washed cotton with a brown velvet collar was shown with a mini kilt skirt with matching bustle.
